Steve Steinman
Steve Steinman - Biography
Back in 1990 ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ hit our TV screens for the first
time, transforming everyday people into superstars for ‘one night’.
After his appearance sixteen years ago, performing as Meat Loaf, Steve Steinman
has worked hard to extend that ‘one night’ into a full blown career.
The work paid off and Steve is not only famous for his tribute to Meat Loaf in
The Meat Loaf Trilogy but also as ‘Baron Von Rockula’
in hit touring show Vampires Rock.
Steve has spent many years performing as Meat Loaf in successful touring shows
The Meat Loaf Story and The Meat Loaf
Trilogy where, not only has he played hundreds of shows all around
the World, but also sold thousands of albums and DVDs – enough to rival any of
today’s Pop Stars!
As well as being a very busy singer and actor, Steve is also the driving force
behind his own production company Rockman Music and has worked
with some of the World’s best-known Rock Stars.
Born in Manchester in 1965, Steve started out on a very different career path. A
love of good food led him to train and begin work as a chef in his home city.
Though enjoying his job, Steve became frustrated with being unable to create the
food he wanted to, and decided to open and run his own restaurant. It was a big
gamble at a young age, but one that paid off and Steve soon branched out
further, running a number of restaurants, bars and hotels.
Ever the all round host, regulars in Steve’s bars began to notice his talent for
singing and would often request him to perform for them. Knowing an entertained
customer would always return, Steve was more than happy to open his powerful
lungs!
Never actually intending to leave the restaurant business behind, Steve applied
for ‘Stars In Their Eyes’, after being urged to do so by anyone who
heard him sing. After an amazing response from the show, Steve decided he had
achieved so much within the restaurant business, that he would give performing a
chance. Sixteen years on, Steve no longer owns a restaurant, but still loves his
time in the kitchen whenever he gets the chance (which isn’t very often when you
spend half your life on a tour bus!)
In 2004 Steve produced brand new show Vampires Rock a
concert fantasy featuring all of the great rock anthems.
The show, along with Steve’s popularity continued to grow, and in 2005 Steve and
‘Vampires Rock’ embarked on an Arena tour, performing at Sheffield, Nottingham
and Manchester Evening News arena.
2006 saw the release of the Vampires Rock DVD, filmed live at Nottingham Arena,
released on Mad Man Records and available from all good record stores.
Also in 2006 word of fantastic new show, Vampires Rock,
reached the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. Steve received a call
of interest in the show from guitarist/rock star Paul Crook (lead guitarist with
Anthrax, Sebastian Bach, and quite appropriately, Meat Loaf!) Steve then
visited Vegas, where he and Paul Crook began talks to produce a brand new
version of Vampires Rock to perform on the Vegas
strip. This project is still ongoing and Steve hopes to open the show there
before the decade is out!
The 2007 tour saw Twisted Sister’s Eddie Ojeda join Vampires Rock and
in 2008 the legendary Toyah Willcox joined in a brand new role created just for
her. Toyah has also signed up for the 2009 tour.
Also in 2008 Steve produced his first show that didn’t feature him at all!
Dolly – A Celebration of the Leading Lady of Country charts the rise of
Dolly Parton. With a fantastic country band, great singers, dancers and stage
set, the show was well received an embarks on it’s second full tour in May 2009.
The biggest project for 2009 sees Steve in the driving seat once again. Bat
Out Of Hell The
Symphony is a dream Steve has had for a long time. Combining a 40 piece
Orchestra with Steve’s very own rock band to perform all of Meat Loaf’s biggest
hits, was always going to be major project with a big risk. But sales have
surpassed all expectations!
2010 will see a whole new era for Steve, as he brings Daniel Abineri’s hit
Australian Musical, Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom
to the UK.
Formerly starring Russell Crowe in the lead role, Bad Boy Johnny and
the Prophets of Doom is an original rock musical which will embark
on it’s first UK tour in March and April 2010.
It tells the story of a Johnny, a boy from the wrong side of town, who forms a
band, is managed by an evil priest, becomes the Pope and then ends up the target
of a live TV assassination!
The production promises to include some star names, and with one role requiring
the talent of a ‘male rock singer’ it looks like Steve won’t be hanging up his
microphone just yet!

Daniel as Frank’N’Furter in The Rocky Horror
In 1986 he wrote the book, music and lyrics for his first musical Bad Boy Johnny
and The Prophets Of Doom. This rock’n’roll extravaganza about an altar boy who
becomes the worlds first rock Pope, premiered in Melbourne in 1989 and featured
a young Russell Crowe in the title role. Daniel had discovered Russell some
years earlier when he had given him his first professional acting role in a New
Zealand tour of ‘Rocky Horror’. ‘Bad Boy Johnny’ enjoyed a six month run in
Melbourne and Sydney, won two International Pater Awards™ for best libretto and
score, and spawned a cast album on WEA Records (which Daniel also produced) and
a top ten single in Australia.
Returning to the UK in ‘93 Daniel mounted a showcase production of Bad Boy
Johnny at The Union Chapel in Islington - the production became a cause celebre
in 1994 and made front page news when a collection of irate nuns, the London arm
of Opus Dei, The Daily Telegraph and the Church Council of Great Britain
complained that it was 'offensive and blasphemous'. After a spate of death
threats the production was closed after just ten
performances.
In 1997 he produced and directed his first documentary, One Hit Wonders for the
BBC2 . He followed this in 1999 with a study of androgyny and theatricallity in
pop music called Walk On The Wildside (Granada, for the ITV Network), which
featured interviews with Lindsay Kemp, Ray Davies,Dave Stewart, Mick Rock and
others. Other films he’s produced and directed include Hogarths’ London for BBC
Manchester (2000), and Murder & Celebrity (Voodoo Films for UKtv). He is
currently completing a documentary feature entitled A Conversation With James
Lovelock for Network Films.
